Minimum for the Growing Disciple

Feb 12th, 2009 | By art rogers | Category: General Christian

So I was reading 2 Peter yesterday and was impressed at the force Peter uses to call for disciples to continue growing in their relationship.  You can read it for yourself:  2 Peter 1:2-15.

For a disciple to continue to grow steadily, I think he or she needs four things daily:

  1. Introspection – It’s vital that we calm our mind and ask God to show us who we are in relation to who He is and what He is doing in us and around us.
  2. Prayer – Including worship, confession, thanksgiving, supplication (prayer for yourself) and intercession (prayer for others).  Mostly we just do the last two.  The first three are where real intimacy happens.
  3. Bible Study – Not just a cursory reading of the Bible, but investigation and meditation.
  4. Scripture Memory – Not only is this prescribed by God’s Word, but it is practically helpful.  It is giving the Holy Spirit tools for guidance in every day situations from the mundane to the crucial.
