[Institutional v. Missional Church: Structure will post at noon today.]

Relating to the previous quote, “Institutionalized,” the protagonist, Andy Dufresne had just joined his friends at lunch after two weeks in the hole.  He was sent to the hole for playing Mozart over the prison public address system.  He is trying to explain the power of music and why he said that since Mozart was with him, it was the easiest time he’d ever done.

“It’s in here (pointing to his head).  It’s in here (pointing to his heart).  That’s the beauty of music.  They can’t get that from you.  Haven’t you ever felt that way about music?”

[Red answering] “I played a mean harmonica as a younger man.  Lost interest in it, though.  Don’t make much sense in here.”

[Andy] “Here’s where it makes the most sense.  You need it so you don’t forget.”

[Red] “Forget?”

[Andy] “Forget there are places in the world that aren’t made out of stone.  That there’s a… there’s something inside that they can’t get to.  That they can’t touch.  That’s yours.”

[Red] ” ‘chya talkin’ ’bout?”

[Andy] “Hope.”

[Red]  “Hope.  Let me tell you somethin’, my friend.  Hope is a dangerous thing.  Hope can drive a man insane.  It’s got no use on the inside.  You better get used to that idea.”

[Andy]  “Like Brooks did?”

I sense a bit of difference in this one. I don’t think most inmates feel like the prison is there for their personal enjoyment. Too many churchmembers seem to think that.

A couple years ago FBC started an early (8am) “Old Time Gospel Hour” service. Use the hymnal, no praise choruses, preach out of the KJV, pass the plates (the other services, we have offering boxes and otherwise hadn’t passed the plate since 2/2/2000). The first Sunday, a man who had been visiting for something over 10 years, joined the church.

He said “You finally have a service I like”.

    Bob,

That’s certainly true. Most church members don’t look at the church, even the Institutional Church, as something they don’t enjoy. But I think you may be assuming that I am pressing every part of the situation into a perfect analogy. I’m not.

As you well know, analogies are never exact matches. What is true in them is true and what is not true is not true.

I would hate for anyone to assume that I think the Institutional Church is like a prison for Christians. It certainly isn’t.

I am only trying to draw out some truths about institutions in general and what we can glean there is possibly helpful here.
