One of the things from which I have had to guard myself from is sexual media, both written and graphic. Most men I know need to do this, whether or not they actually are. Porn is a serious problem, but you don’t have to be looking at porn to be looking at things that are detrimental to your spiritual, mental, emotional, relational and physical condition.
I have encouraged others to download and use the X3 accountability software from xxxchurch.com. X3 software records sites that it thinks are inappropriate and emails your accountability partners the list periodically. The problem with X3 is that it has some holes in the software that don’t log everything it should and there is no filtering at all. As a friend of mine said today, X3 is great for those that don’t know where the holes are.
This same friend suggested to me today that I switch to covenanteyes.com’s accountability software and filter. You can get it with just the accountability software, but I got both.
Let me tell you that, if protecting yourself from sexually explicit material is important to you, you should check out Covenant Eyes. Here’s two reasons why:
The report generated from Covenant Eyes is extremely detailed. I watched the report being generated as I simply logged onto my homepage, my.yahoo.com. It is extensive and that means there aren’t holes for things that you shouldn’t see to get through.
The filter works well and is editable. If CE blocks something you need to get to, you can override it, but it will add that to the report, so you won’t be overriding the filter without your accountability people knowing about it.
This stuff is good for someone who is addicted and needs to break free, or for someone who is just trying to stay away from stuff they don’t need to see.
For the serious addict that is tempted to circumvent the system, they have other benefits like reports that are on their server, so you can’t get to the report and delete it before your wife sees it, for instance. Also, the software takes control of your internet connection. If it is not on and working, you can’t get on the internet. If you take it out of the startup, you can’t get on the internet. If you turn it off, you can’t get on the internet. If you are severely tempted, there is a “panic button” that you can hit that will shut down your internet access until you call tech support and get it turned back on. That also generates a report to your accountability partners. If you want to uninstall the software on your computer, you have to call tech support and get a code…
… which generates a report to your accountability partners.
In other words, once you have it installed and running, you are accountable and filtered. That’s good for you. You should try it.
X3 doesn’t cost (unless you get the slightly better version at $19.95 one time cost, but is still no where near as comprehensive as CE), but you kind of get what you pay for, as in most things.
CE is going to cost me less than $10 a month to maintain my integrity on the internet. A very small price to pay.

I recommend Covenant Eyes to my clients and keep a stack of their brochures in my office.
Who gets your reports? I’m not interested in a name; just curious if, as a pastor, your accountability partner is a church member/deacon or a friend/family member?

Art-
Thanks for making me aware of this; I downloaded it onto my laptop immediately and will do so on the home comp later today. The temptations are just too frequent.
Re: xxxchurch accountability software–I downloaded the free thing twice and each time it quit working after a while. It simply quit sending the reports to my accountability partner and I quit receiving his. That didn’t do me much good.
Bowden-
I’m using another pastor at my church and am using myself as accountability for my 16 year old son.

Bowden,
I am using my wife and a friend who is a pastor at another church – the one who recommended the software.
I used to use someone else who was a pastor, but I moved a year ago and we don’t have the frequent contact we once did.
Marty,
Glad that you could benefit. I feel a ton better right now, knowing that my internet is being filtered as well as monitored.

Thanks for your comments about Covenant Eyes software. It is very helpful to hear constructive comments from our customers. It’s great to talk to others who are engaged in the fight for purity! God bless you and your ministry at Skelly Drive Baptist Church.

Hey Art,
Thought you might like to see the new video Covenant Eyes just made. You might be interested to pass it on to others who might benefit from Internet accountability:
