Let these stones be a witness to what we have done here this day.

Phriday foto 07-13-07 Penguins in Tulsa

Jul 13th, 2007 | By art rogers | Category: Phriday fotos

Ok, so Tulsa has this thing with penguin statues all over the city. They are each decorated differently and are sporadically placed all over town. This one is near downtown between two of our hospitals that I was visiting.

  1. Why penguins? In Cadiz, we have painted pigs everywhere. But, then we also host the world famous Country Ham Festival every October. ;)

  2. The penguin is one of Tulsa’s “Penguins on Parade,” a local art project that was used to raise funds for the Tulsa Zoo’s penguin habitat. There are dozens all over the city. Of course, Art, being new to Tulsa wouldn’t know that.

  3. Most of them are in better shape than this one, also. I’ll post more later on other Fridays.

    Vicki,

Thanks for the info. I’m not so new. One year this week!

  4. The penguins are confusing. Oklahoma City has done something similar with Bison, but in Oklahoma Bison make sense. Penguins….not so much.

  5. I thought you were leaving for Branson.

My original thought was much the same as yours. Vicki’s explanation at least makes some sense, but if you weren’t here for that, it’s just kinda odd.

  6. I always make sense!! We went through a time when people were stealing them. They found 4 or 5 in one guys back yard. Kinda tough to hide large colorful penguins.

  7. I think they are kinda cute. Wouldn’t mind having a sculpture of some sort for my back yard, though I don’t think I’d steal one. I thought usually cities sold these after the main emphasis was over to private buyers so that they wouldn’t end up with people thinking … “huh?” years later. I think Dallas had something like that with a Pegasus theme years back, but if I remember right from some news report they were just temporary art for the area then relocated.

  8. I love your Phriday foto’s.

    Judy

  9. Wait until you see next week’s. :D

  10. Art,

PENGUINS??? In Tulsa??? I saw camels on the streets of Dubai and buffalo in Oklahoma City…But PENGUINS in Tulsa make about as much sense as the mascot for the University of Tulsa. On the other hand, we really enjoyed services this morning. Even though I did not get a bracelet, I promise to pray for the adult sponsors this week. I have been impressed with the improvements in the programs at Falls Creek. In my youth, and that of my children, speakers and song leaders did not seem to connect well with the campers. That has changed, and programs, speakers and music people are a very good fit for Falls Creek campers.
