Pre-Jackson Run Down
Feb 14th, 2007 | By art rogers | Category: Blogging, Church, General Christian, Missional, SBCI leave EARLY tomorrow for Jackson, TN and the Baptist Identity II Conference at Union University. I plan to live blog the speakers there and will, therefore be posting regularly throughout the weekend.
Until then, though, I am swamped. You see, I return to Tulsa Saturday night and fly to the border of Mexico to join our church’s mission team who will already be on site. I am trying to get prepared for a long absence and that takes a lot of work.
Just to keep you reading today, though, I want to recommend a few articles that you need to read today.
First, Marty Duren’s book review of Glocalization, by Bob Roberts Jr., is up. Web guru and pastor, David Phillips, sent one to Marty, Kevin Bussey and myself on the condition that we would review it. I am still reading it. I hope to finish this weekend, but I will give you a quote to set the hook. From the first chapter of Glocalization:
God’s Kingdom expands to every person, every domain of knowledge and life, and every bit of information. For too long, we have made God in our image and shrunk him to narrow concerns and issues that suited us and put us at the center of everything (so we could make sense of it all). We have not marveled at his comprehensiveness and our inability not to have all the answers. Glocal is how all of those domains are intersecting and creating new ways of thinking and living. (pg.20)
Sounds almost reminiscent of John Piper, doesn’t it? As I said, that is just to set the hook. You need to read this book.
Chadwick Ivester is publishing an interview with Bill Curtis, pastor and Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the North American Mission Board. Curtis addresses the current situation in the SBC and our future together. He does so with insight and grace.
Geoff Baggett has published an article, Call 911, in which he describes a sense of urgency among us with some frightful statistics.
In a similar vein, Cyle Clayton asks a series of penetrating questions about the future of your church in particular in his post, If Yours Was The Only Church…
Last, but NOT least, Rick Thompson gives us the article, the “dreams to memories” ratio.
I would love for you to read all of these articles and then answer me one question:
Will we succeed if we do not change?
Art,
Have fun at my old alma mater (UU class of 1988!). I hope you guys figure out what it means to be Southern Baptists! ;)
Thanks for the link to my 911 post.
Geoff

Have a safe trip. Hope no one changes your identity at the conference. We like you just the way you are!
