Page and Calvinism

Marty Duren just posted a response for Frank Page on the issue of Calvinism. He specifically addresses the issue of his book’s statement and blog critique.

With Marty’s permission, I am reposting the content of that email here.

In regard to reformed theology or Calvinist issues, let me respond in several ways. I would ask for clarity and accuracy. On one of the blogs, one brother stated that I had published a remark that Calvinists were “dupes of the devil.” I have never said anything like that.

In my book I do clearly say that one of the duties of Satan is to limit the work of Christ on [the] cross (p.63). I stand by this remark and believe it totally. I believe that John 10:10 shows the intent of our Lord as well as the intent of the evil one. Nowhere do I say that Calvinists are a part of the devil’s work.

I have made very clear my stance regarding the issue of Calvinism in personal conversation, writing, and speaking. I am not a five point Calvinist and do not agree with that particular soteriology. However, as I’ve demonstrated in my own life and personal relationships, I’m willing to work with persons who do hold Calvinist theology if they have a sweet spirit and an evangelistic heart.

I remember one person who stated that “Calvinism is the only way one can perceive Christianity.” I would have great difficulty working with a person of such narrow minded philosophy. However, I would welcome at the table of SBC participation all Southern Baptists who hold to the integrity of scripture, have a common desire to see the Great Commission enacted locally, nationally, and internationally and who have a spirit of cooperation and humility.

Having not read the book (but thinking I might now have to do so) I am hesitant to offer an opinion as to whether or not Page answers the questions raised thus far.
