Tim Rogers (my long lost cousin?) alerted me to an editorial at the Biblical Recorder Online that has some interesting news about potential candidates for president.
You can find it here:
Among the candidates discussed are Ronnie Floyd, Wade Burleson, David Dockery and Frank Page.
And now there is a “Kingmaker” endorsement:
Patterson endorses Floyd as a man Southern Baptists need
Will this seal the deal or be the kiss of death?
ANYONE WANTING TO DISCUSS THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDACY SHOULD POST HERE.
Thank you.

I have it on good record that Dr. Dockery will certainly not accept a nomination for Presidency.

A name that has passed across my desk recently is Mack Brunson. As I recall, he came from FBC High Point, NC before going to FBC Dallas after Joel Gregory and before O.S. Hawkins. He was pastor of one of my friends in undergrad, and FBC High Point has a good reputation in these parts. That be ironic…in Greensboro, elect a home town guy.
This is just a name that was run in my direction. I have NO idea who else may run.
I must say, however, that it’s rather nice to know there is so much interest this late. The race is usually fixed (oops, I mean the candidate is already chosen) a long way out.
Interesting note on Dr. Patterson. I guess I know the answer to my question over at Strange Baptist Fire.
This was Dr. Patterson on the confetti baptistry when he was asked but not told the name of the church, according to the Founders Journal (see Tom Ascol’s blog for the link to it).
Dever: I heard about one church recently, and I don’t know if you know about churches like this or not, in order to encourage baptisms among children the baptistry is shaped like a fire truck and they’ve got confetti cannons that go off whenever a kid is baptized. Do you know about any of this?
Patterson: This is my first time to hear this. This is blasphemous!
Dever: Anyway, it’s a church in America. It’s an evangelical church and they mean to preach the gospel so I want to be real quick to say their intentions are good. That’s going to get kids of course, because they want to come forward, get in the fire truck and make the confetti cannons go off.
Patterson: I do not view [positively] the huge number of child baptisms that Baptists are now guilty of–Baptists are some of the worst paedo-baptizers there are.
At SBF, I asked:
If this is “blasphemous” will it be blasphemous enough for Dr. Patterson to say so to Brother Ronnie’s face? If it is truly “blasphemous” then is it blasphemous enough to keep Dr. Patterson from giving his imprimatur? If so, why? If not, why not? I only ask, because it seems necessary to have the approval of Dr. Patterson for so much, at least implicitly, and if he approves of the nomination of a person pastoring a church who’s children’s baptistry he has called “blasphemous,” that just seems mighty odd.
Oh well.

You invited speculation. Page will run.(party loyal, doesn’t like tulips) Wade will nominate him. Floyd will withdraw in order to bring “harmony and unity” to the convention. Diehards save face. Nothing changes.

UNRELATED BUT IMPORTANT QUESTIONS FOR SENIOR PASTORS READING THIS BLOG:
Unfortunately (!), not all of the readers of this blogsite are MOE’s–many of you seem to be senior pastors (or equivalent title in the congregation you serve). If Art will permit it, I’d like to ask you (not “trick questions”):
(1) “If you were a church’s leading candidate for its vacant senior pastor position, how much leadership would you hope that the associate ministry staff would have exercised to help the congregation prepare for your arrival?”
(2) “If that church had had no clear vision/mission/destination prior to your predecessor’s departure (good a preaching/pastoral care; not good at leadership), would you appreciate the remaining associate ministry staff leading the congregation to establish vision/mission/destination before you arrive (how much such leadership, in your opinion, would be appropriate before your arrival as next senior pastor)?”
I ask the questions above because, though I know my own answers to them, I’d like to hear from men serving now as senior pastors. And, the congregation I serve as MOE is experiencing this now. Your help is appreciated.
Please reply to: justamoe@hotmail.com . Thanks for your help and cooperation.

Brother Gene,
Brunson was not at FBC High Point, he was at Greene(sp?) Street Baptist. When you say “passed across my desk” can you elaborate more. Is this speculation on someones part or do they really have inside sources?
justamoe,
I can only speak for myself. If you are speaking of setting vision for the church I believe that needs to wait for the Sr. Pastor. If you are speaking about short term vision for the transition time then all that Associates do during the time of Interim would be beneficial for the Sr Pastor coming. Also, any Sr. Pastor that truly desires to follow God, will understand that God is already at work in the world around him and he needs to seek that out and direct his vision and ministry in that direction. Therefore, if a ministry is born during the interim it would only help the Sr. when he comes.

Tim:
Thanks for the reply–and to Art for permitting it (continue at justamoe@hotmail.com?).
Can the congregation know the type of senior pastor it is seeking without understanding what it is to be and do? Does understanding its purpose/mission/etc. help the congregation sort through the hundreds of resumes it’s likely to receive? If a God-given vision/mission/destination already were in place, should a new senior pastor anticipate having freedom to change the congregation’s course (a “senior pastor” model is one option for staffing; is it the biblical one)?
Please advise. Thanks again (anyone else??).

justamoe,
I don’t know that your whole deal is on topic, but it is inoccuous and not the topic of anything else I have posted or am likely to post, with a caveat listed below.
Mostly, though, it is not a random plug for your blog on my blog. Blog plugging is fine, I do it at Marty’s a bit, ;), but it is on topic when I do.
I’ll email you my responses. If the readers want my answers, post a comment and I’ll make a full post of it.
I still have to get through the MD point by point and I thought I might tackle Tad’s questions.
I think I may make a “rules” button to govern the things that get deleted. Would that be helpful? At least I wouldn’t have to explain myself to people who complain I have deleted their comment. Chime in on this, if you want.
I want one of those survey things to put on my blog, but I can’t find a good one for free. Since I am asking ya’ll for feedback, any ideas where I can get a good one?
Also, as to FBC, Dallas, you must be talking about Tim, ’cause you surely aren’t talking about me.
Tim,
How about a flashlight? That seems to be something I get every year, but by next year I need a new one. Can’t keep up with ‘em. I think the kids take them into their rooms and they disappear from there.
Kevin,
No. I really don’t think it is appropriate. I suppose that certain folks think it is their inheritance to continue to direct the SBC as long as they live. Distasteful.

Yeah, that was hilarious! >:(
I’ll just come out with it –
I was emailing back and forth with an ACTUAL big dog in the convention who has been gracious enough to meet with me next week.
In the middle of that long email response I was writing, my Secretary tells me Dr. Ronnie Floyd is on the phone for me.
Bought it hook line and sinker. Jason Sampler led me on for like a minute or so before he told me who he was. I am going to find a way to hurt that guy!

I think I’ll call David Dockery again. Can’t you hear the buzz from his secretary?
“Um…Dr. Dockery, are you available to take a call?”
“Yes, I am. Who is it?”
“It’s a man who says he’s from Macedonia. He wants you to come help him.”
“Johnny Hunt?”
“No…he’s got a Texas accent. Is Macedonia a city in Texas?”
“Oh dear…Ben again. Put him through.”

Ok, here is some more self depricating humor…
My wife has been telling me, “The blog is good and all, but don’t get the big head…”
In other words, you’re still just a Youth Minister who wants to be a pastor.
When I told her this morning about what Jason did, she almost (and I mean this LITERALLY) fell out of the bed laughing.
She is still laughing now. She says, “Good one, Jason. Keep him humble.”
Just what I need.

I’m not being a smart aleck because I have no beef against Ronnie Floyd. But why aren’t all the people backing him concerned about his association with PK. Most of the PK leadership speak in tongues. It is interesting to me how we pick and choose what is important based on our own agendas.

I have known Paige a long time. He is a person of good judgment and character. I don’t know Floyd.
If Paige says Floyd would make a good president, I will follow his advice and vote for Floyd.
I sense that the grass roots does not want a fight this year and would like to see a SBC convention for once with out headline grabbing controversy in the liberal press.
In Southern Georgia, people are coming together behind Floyd. I also hear the support is coming together in South Carolina.
