A Promise and A Caution…

TAGS: None

I have written a letter to the individual members of the International Mission Board’s Board of Trustees. I told them in that letter that I would be making it an “open letter” and publishing it soon. I have received several responses back and I want to thank them. I assure all that I will quote directly only those who have given me permission to do so. All other referenced communication will be handled appropriately.

Readers of my blog can look for this “open letter” here and it will be published soon. Currently I am giving the Trustees time to respond as they see fit. I will also be sending it to my state paper, the Baptist Press and the Associated Baptist Press.

Today, however, I would like to address one common theme in all of the Trustee communication to date: the promise of a response. We have heard consistently that there would be a response and that it would come soon. I have been personally encouraged by trustees to remain open minded until such a response comes.

Here is my promise: I will read every word of every response and receive any and all evidence with an open mind. I will listen to everything that is said by the Board and will publicly support them if they give me evidence of wrongdoing. I will post everything that justifies their actions thus far and will adamantly stand alongside any truth they bring out.

Here is my caution: The longer you wait and the more you hide behind the rules of secrecy, the more your credibility in this issue erodes.

Telling everyone that you have truth on your side, but that we have to wait for you to prepare the statement, sounds disingenuous. Truth can be spoken from the top of one’s head and be credible. Still, to give you the benefit of the doubt, one may want to organize thoughts before addressing such an important issue. However, the longer you take to organize, the more it looks like you are trying to spin gold from straw.

I realize that your credibility is on the line. If, however, Wade is the only one that is speaking about the issue, Wade is the one asking that everything be made public and Wade is the one who wants everything done in open session while you still do not speak and hide behind closed sessions, then you leave all of the credibility on Wade’s side of the table.

I urge you, with my promise intact, to procede openly and with all due haste to make plain what you have to say in defense of your actions.

Looking forward to your open letter. Also, the trustees need to understand what you said in the two paragraphs immediately preceding the final statement. They are the one who look like they have something to hide. They need to be open and forthcoming soon, before the rest of their credibility evaporates.
